Inclusion in the performing arts sector and the audiovisual and digital sector
Kathy Goffin
The challenge
What is the position of discrimination and inclusion in the Flemish workplace? The Flemish government initiated a study on this issue through a baseline measurement. Given that traditional methods such as distributing CVs would not be effective in the cultural sectors, an alternative approach was chosen. The Flemish government wants to develop actions based on this research to strengthen the representation of some groups. Therefore, underlying factors of underrepresentation need to be identified.
The process & results
Clients Mediarte and Performing Arts Social Fund (Sociaal Fonds Podiumkunsten) made a delineation of four target groups on the basis of already known challenges, which our research then focused on. We focused on women, people with disabilities, people with a migration background and older workers (50+). These are groups already known to be underrepresented in the sectors.
We used a combination of research methods to explore the inclusion challenges and make them more visible: document analysis, analysis of existing data from employment and education sources, an online survey and focus groups. To validate the results and obtain input regarding recommendations, we organised a strategic workshop per sector.
The results, conclusions and recommendations were compiled in a separate report for each sector.
