The challenge

The importance of nature and biodiversity can no longer be denied. The need and urgency to pay more attention to it are coming at us more compellingly from both below and above.
IDEA Consult guided the Nature team of the province of East Flanders in defining their future vision and strategy to give more attention to nature and biodiversity.

The process & results

Co-creation, support and transversal thinking are key elements we include in the framework of any strategy project. We also did this in the process with the Nature team of the province of East Flanders.
The future vision came about during four interactive working sessions with staff from the Nature team. In these sessions, we proceeded as follows to draw up a future vision for nature and biodiversity:

• We evaluated the current functioning of the Nature team from a recruiting view of the future.
• We redefined the mission, vision and strategic objectives.
• We worked out actions and tools to realise the mission, vision and objectives.
• We reviewed available resources and assigned priorities.

Throughout the various sessions, inspiration was also drawn from other provinces. In addition, we foresaw an exchange and review with the other provincial departments and a number of external organisations in this process, because of the far-reaching cooperation and the connection with their work.

At the end of the process, we presented a future note with a set of policy recommendations for the new board team. The note included:

• A recruiting mission and vision for the Nature team;
• Strategic and operational objectives for the coming years;
• Tools and partners needed to achieve the objectives.
