Belgian Presidency of the Council of the European Union: IDEA supports SPW-TLPE on the theme of territorial development.

Belgium at the helm of the European Union: Wallonia is taking the lead in shaping Europe's territorial future. Join us on this adventure full of crucial challenges such as reducing spatial artifices and urban sprawl.

Since 1 January 2024, Belgium has held the Presidency of the Council of the European Union. The responsibilities of this presidency are divided between the federal and regional levels, and Wallonia, among others, holds the presidency seat for "Territorial Cohesion", which refers to what is nationally known as "spatial planning".

The Belgian presidency is an opportunity to include priorities in the agenda of all member states while ensuring continuity with previously raised issues. Wallonia has chosen to focus on reducing the artificialisation of land, urban sprawl and sealing.

IDEA is proud to support the Walloon Region in consolidating an ambitious programme for the coming months.

All the themes of the programme will be discussed at intergovernmental meetings in April with Member States' territorial cohesion focal points and in June with Directors-General.

But that's not all: we look forward to sharing our thoughts with a wider audience during ESPON Week, scheduled for 5 and 6 June 2024. This event will be an opportunity to open the debate and foster cooperation around the territorial issues that affect us all.

ESPON is the European Partnership for Spatial Development and Territorial Cohesion. This partnership has been contributing to (environmental) policy since 2002 by providing research and analysis on territorial trends and producing data and knowledge for policy makers.

IDEA consult is Belgian ESPON Contact Point until November 2029.
